I hope you’ve all been enjoying day 1 at Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic, our headline Wimbledon selection has just progressed to the second round with a 3-1 victory over Kwon Soon-woo on centre court.
Djokovic got a minor scare when the South Korean won the second set comfortably 6-3 but the 35yrs old Serb and number one seed powered on in typical Djokovic fashion to progress to the next round. The defending champion now faces a match-up with the 26yrs old Aussie, Thanasi Kokkinakis.
With the day’s play not yet complete at the time of writing, it’s going to be interesting to see if any of the big guns fall at the first hurdle.
As we look ahead to Day 2 at Wimbledon and the other side of the draw with Rafael Nadal headlining, I’ve found a match that has caught my racket in the woman’s singles.
Sloane Stephens the former US Open Champion and Wimbledon quarter-finalist can use all her experience to overcome Zheng Qinwen in what should be a thrilling first-round encounter.
The Chinese youngster will find it hard to make a breakthrough with Stephens having found some recent form with a quarter-final place at the French Open last month.
Stephens has won 10/19 games this season which includes a winning run when victorious at the Abierto Zapopan, her seventh WTA singles title.
Meanwhile, Zheng has won 10/21 matches this season, her best performance was when reaching the semi-finals at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.
With only two games played on grass this year and two first-round exits, I can only see one outcome here as Sloane Stephens makes it, maybe not comfortably but makes it all the same into the second round just as she has done at the last three attempts here at Wimbledon.
