CHELSEA have a mountain to climb in Madrid tonight after Karim Benzema’s hat-trick at Stamford Bridge last week earned Real a 3-1 first leg win.
The Blues will need to become the first English side to win a Champions League game at the Bernabeu by more than a single goal in order to qualify but they’ll travel in good spirits following Saturday’s six-goal demolition of Southampton.
But Chelsea have failed to score more than two away goals in a knock-out tie since their 3-1 win over Liverpool back in the 2008-09 season so the task ahead is huge and they should probably be bigger than 7/1 chances to qualify.
As Chelsea chase the game they could be vulnerable at the back and 29/20 for a repeat Real Madrid looks some value.
The aforementioned Benzema will be the key danger for Madrid and he’s 11/10 to score once more. He’s already hit 11 Champions League goals this season, the highest tally of his career.
Villarreal have given themselves a fighting chance to progress after a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich last midweek. They managed to keep Robert Lewandowski quiet and kept Bayern’s chances to a minimum but it’ll be a tall order to do so for another 90 minutes in Germany.
The Spaniards need look no further than the last round for a warning of what may lie ahead tonight. RB Salzburg held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in their first leg only to be thumped 7-1 in the return. That took Bayern’s goals tally in the Champions League to 30 this season with 20 of those scored in just four home games.
You’d expect Unai Emery’s side to be well-drilled but even the best laid plans can unravel at the Allianz. Like Chelsea, Villarreal feel a bit too short at 9/4 to qualify and big-hitters might fancy a bit of the 1/3 on Bayern to prevail. Alternatively the 4/6 on the Germans to qualify inside the 90 minutes appeals too.
