International matches mean a much-reduced domestic card this weekend but there’s still plenty for us punters to get involved in.
Ireland‘s progress under Stephen Kenny will be given a stern examination this evening (5.00pm) by the world’s highest ranked team, Belgium. Kenny went 13 games without a win when first installed as Irish boss but since then they’ve lost just once in their last 10 and that was thanks to a spectacular late double by Ronaldo for Portugal.
There’s plenty of positivity around the squad but the only team of note they’ve played in that run is Portugal, with whom they also drew 0-0. Outside of that, wins against Luxembourg, Qatar, Azerbaijan and Andorra don’t exactly have Europe sitting up and taking notice and they could fall short tonight.
There’s no De Bruyne, Lukaku, Mertens or Eden Hazard for Belgium as Roberto Martinez takes the opportunity to hand some international experience to fringe players in his squad but there should still be plenty of quality on show from the Belgians and they look a good price at 21/20.
England welcome Switzerland to Wembley as Gareth Southgate seeks to fine-tune his squad for Qatar later in the year. The Three Lions qualified for the World Cup comfortably and are always a formidable proposition on home soil.
The Swiss topped Group C ahead of Italy to book their place in the World Cup finals but the Italian’s shock exit at the hands of North Macedonia hasn’t done much to enhance the form book. They qualified with the joint lowest goals tally (15, same as Spain) and were held to a 0-0 draw at Northern Ireland.
In front of a packed Wembley they might frustrate England but Southgate’s men should prevail at 7/10.
In Scotland, Kilmarnock have been all the rage this week and have been tipped up elsewhere on the site by Mark Walker and KevMac.
They host Partick Thistle, who, having put themselves in a position to challenge for the title, have collapsed in recent weeks.
The opposite can be said for Killie who have won three on the bounce and enjoy a two-point lead over long-time leaders Arbroath. While everyone else in the league have been taking points off each other Derek McInnes’ side have picked up 16 points from the last 18 to move in to pole position. Killie’s odds are shortening all the time. They opened up around even money but are now just 3/4.
Annan have served us well in recent weeks and we can cash in again when they host Albion Rovers today. They’ve now won seven of their last eight and can take a step closer to securing second place with a win at 4/5 over Albion who have won only twice this year.
Plymouth have been flying in League One, winning six in a row without conceding to consolidate their play-off claims. They travel to Ipswich who are unbeaten in nine with four wins and five draws. The Tractor Boys aren’t conceding many either, losing just two goals in their last 10 so it could be a tight one at Portman Road. Argyle look a lively outsider at 15/4 or 4/5 on the Double Chance market.
