Newcastle Preview & Betting Tips – February 21st
The after-effects of Storm Eunice are continuing to wreak havoc with the racing programme, but Newcastle look set to go ahead with their evening fixture on Monday.
It’s a six-race offering from the Gosforth Park venue running from 5.00pm-7.30pm, and you can watch every race live when logged into MansionBet.
Our tipster marks your card for this evening’s all-weather action.
5.00 – Betway Handicap (1m2f)
ATHMAD was finally rewarded for a string of consistent all-weather form over the winter when he got up late in the piece to win at Wolverhampton last week.
A change to hold-up tactics appeared to work well for him in that contest and Ruth Carr’s chare has only been nudged up 1lb for his bother. He could strike again.
Selection: Athmad @ 15/8
5.30 – Mansionbet Proud Partners Of AWC Handicap (1m)
Last week’s C&D winner ABNAA was better than ever in that win, his third at Newcastle, and with it having arrived in an apprentice handicap, he’s unpenalised in this follow-up attempt.
Anthony Brittain’s charge has a fine chance to make the most of this drop into Class 6 company.
Selection: Abnaa @ 4/1
6.00 – MansionBet Beaten By A Head Median Auction Maiden Stakes (7f)
Wooders Dream ran well on debut when finishing third at Wolverhampton in the autumn but hasn’t been seen since, she could still build on that, but the more recent form belongs to Hugo Palmer’s NATIVE ANGEL.
The Zoffany filly was narrowly touched off by a rival having had the benefit of a run when debuting at Lingfield last month, the pair of them having come clear. With improvement anticipated, she looks the one to beat.
Selection: Native Angel @ 1/4
6.30 – Read Katie Walsh On Betway Insider Handicap (6f)
This month’s Southwell third was a better effort from I KNOW HOW than we’ve seen in a while. Julie Camacho’s 7YO has won four times over this track and trip in the past, most recently in January 2021.
That effort at Southwell came over 7f and he wasn’t quite able to last home but if he backs it up now, he is 6lb below his last winning mark and can go well at this favoured venue again.
Selection: I Know How @ 7/1
7.00 – BetYourWay At Betway Handicap (6f)
CARIBBEAN SUNSET won on debut for Simon & Ed Crisford in November 2020 over this trip at Lingfield. He only had two more starts last winter for that firm – twice as beaten favourite – and has been off now for 13 months.
He’s moved to Grant Tuer in the interim and while facing a host of former C&D winners in this line-up, he could have more to offer starting out for this yard.
Selection: Caribbean Sunset @ 13/2
7.30 – Betway Novice Stakes (5f)
Trainer James Tate has a strong hand to play here. Flaming Dawn was a ready winner at Kempton in a 5f maiden this month and she could build on that solid debut, while High Velocity scored at Chelmsford in October on his second start.
Karl Burke’s MONTINEY has both speed and winners in his pedigree, however, and the debutant is one to watch closely as such.
Selection: Montiney @ 14/1
