IT’S a massive midweek in Scotland as the New Year’s Derby Day fixtures finally get played after the scheduled winter break was brought forward during the festive period.
And who doesn’t love a midweek Derby under the lights? We’ve two to look forward to tonight in Dundee and Edinburgh before the top of the table clash between Celtic and Rangers tomorrow. Bring it on!
Unsurprisingly it’s the Hibs v Hearts match that’s live on Sky Sports tonight and the TV execs must be banking on it being a more enteraining affair than the last meeting which finished 0-0.
We flagged up some early value on Hearts yesterday at 7/4 and that’s been backed in a touch to 17/10. The Jambos have been excellent this season and sit 10 points clear of the chasing pack in third upon their first season back in the top flight.
In Leith, the Shaun Maloney era has got off to a mixed start at Easter Road. Two early wins had fans purring but recent results – and extra time win over Cove Rangers, a draw with Motherwell and defeat to Livingston – have brought some of them back down to earth. The departure of arguably their best player, Martin Boyle, hasn’t helped the mood around Easter Road but Maloney has added eight new faces in the transfer window to start shaping the squad in his own image.
However, Hearts still look the value bet here. They’ve won three and drawn one of their last four trips across the capital and at 17/10 could just edge what could be another low scoring derby.
The Dundee Derby is another one thats hard to call. United gave a good account of themselves at Celtic Park on Saturday, eventually succumbing to a late winner but both sides have endured terrible runs of form lately, each losing six on the bounce.
The Scottish Cup gave them some respite and they both disposed of lower league opposition before ending their league losing streaks. Dundee United have enjoyed the better of the fixtures recently, winning three and drawing one of the last four and look better equipped than the Dens Park side to win this one at 15/8.
We also flagged up Livi at home to St Johnstone yesterday. The Saints can’t buy a win, nor even a goal at the moment, so have to be opposed whenever possible these days and Livi can still be backed at 5/4.
