There’s jumps action from Newcastle this afternoon with a seven-race card from the north east.
They are underway from 12.50pm with a ‘newcomers’ bumper on the all-weather track, before six races on the turf over jumps, concluding at 3.55pm.
You can watch all the Newcastle action via live streaming when logged into MansionBet, alongside every race from the UK and Ireland every day. Our tipster previews today’s action from Gosforth Park.
12.50 – Cazoo ‘Newcomers’ NH Flat Race (2m, AW)
Nothing to go on form-wise for this newcomers contest so the market should be informative. Dawn Approach gelding Ri Na Farraige is a rare Richard Fahey-trained runner in this sphere and the booking of Brian Hughes is a positive. They should go well. TOP VILLE BOBBY is a half-brother to Phil Kirby’s fine servant Top Ville Ben and could run well at a price with Joe Williamson taking 5lb off.
Selection: Top Ville Bobby @ 12/1
1.25 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 535 Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (2m)
Iain Jardine’s filly OOT MA WAY can make an immediate splash on her first start in a handicap here. She showed improved form on New Year’s Day at Musselburgh on her third start over timber when second behind the 120-rated Ruth Jefferson runner Ince Prince – that rival following up a decisive Catterick win in December. An opening mark of 100 looks within range for this Power filly with potential for more improvement now.
Selection: Oot Ma Way @ 10/3
1.55 – Equine Products UK Handicap Chase (2m)
He’s appropriately named for a visit to the north-east and GALLIC GEORDIE could scarcely be in better form. Sam Drinkwater’s charge twice scored at Lingfield over this trip before defying a 7lb rise to win at Newbury (2m½f, soft) over Christmas when last out. He cruised through that race and quickened away readily on the flat, ensuring he looks up to defying this 9lb higher mark under James Bowen.
Selection: Gallic Geordie @ 10/11
2.25 – DFE Electrical Contractors ‘National Hunt’ Maiden Hurdle (2m4f)
Deeper Blue would be a massive threat if taking the form of his Chepstow second behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Stage Star in October literally. He wasn’t as convincing either side of that run, however. This slightly better surface may favour him and he’s got his chance. MOUNT MELLERAY has plenty credible efforts both over hurdles and fences in Ireland and can show up well on first start for the Hamilton team here.
Selection: Mount Melleray @ 8/1
2.55 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 535 Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (2m7f)
The Tom George-trained COME ON TEDDY got his chasing career off to an excellent start when scoring at Uttoxeter (2m4f, soft) in December and he can easily be forgiven a mid-pack finish in the Grade 2 Dipper at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day given that race was dominated by the very smart looking L’homme Presse. His sights are lowered again now and he’s a proven stayer over three-miles so this longer trip should be a plus for him too.
Selection: Come On Teddy @ 6/4
3.25 – Border Minstrel Pub Handicap Hurdle (2m7½f)
Skipthescales (second) was ahead of the re-opposing KAIZER (fifth) at Kelso last month over a similar trip but Ewan Whillans’ charge perhaps wasn’t done any favours there in being left to make the running in first-time cheekpieces (off here) as he found little at the end. The handicapper eases him 3lb for that run and with some prominent racers in this field, Craig Nicol should get a chance to follow them around now and that can almost certainly aid his mount.
Selection: Kaizer @ 12/1
3.55 – DFE Electrical Maintenance & Repairs Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (2m)
Harry Fry’s mare LADY ADARE won her bumper on debut here back in March in pleasing style and she returned from summer grass with a convincing hurdles win at Uttoxeter (2m, good to soft) in October. That form is very solid, with runner-up Get A Tonic winning her next two starts and next-time-out scorers Tweed Skirt and Holly behind in fourth and fifth. She’s had a wind operation since and, despite a penalty, should make it 3-3 under rules.
Selection: Lady Adare @ 4/11.
