Newcastle were the biggest casualties in the FA Cup on Saturday, going out to League One Cambridge United, and another five Premier League teams will be out to avoid the ignominy of exiting the competition at the hands of lower league opposition on Sunday.
Should Liverpool go out at home to Shrewsbury it’ll trump any giant-killing act in recent memory but Steve Cotterill will take some hope from the fact that the Reds line-up will be a mix of youth and experience as the club continues to deal with injuries and players isolating.
That‘s not stopped the bookies pricing them up at just 1/7. Although the Reds should win it might take an unusual starting XI some time to get going and the 5/6 on no goal before 22:00 could land but everything hinges on the team news at Anfield.
Spurs too are on a hiding to nothing against another League One side in the shape of Morecambe. They’re even shorter, at 1/12.
But things could get tricky for north London rivals Arsenal at Nottingham Forest. The Gunners squad is also looking thin and Mikel Arteta will be forced to dig deep in to his squad.
Forest have come a long way since Steve Cooper took over the reigns. After looking like relegation candidates they’re now serious contenders for a play-off place and will relish the opportunity to not only rub shoulders with the big boys again but to give them a bloody nose.
The City Ground could be venue for Sunday’s big surprise but again a lot will depend on how strong Arsenal’s line-up is. The Championship side are 5/1 to win in 90 mins or they’re 5/4 on the Double Chance market.
It would be much less of a shock if Charlton knocked out struggling Norwich. The Canaries have had an awful season on their return to the top flight and have now failed to score in their last five matches. The cup may offer some welcome respite but it’s difficult to turn that form on and off. It would take a brave man to back them at even money away from home.
Match of the Day could be at the London Stadium where West Ham and Leeds clash and there could be goals. Leeds have been shipping goals for fun lately and have conceded 17 in their last five, while the Hammers have been scoring plenty, finding the net nine times in their last three.
Both managers might view the cup as a bit of a distraction to their league campaigns so again we could see some unfamiliar faces but it has the makings of a cracking cup tie. Over 2.5 Goals pays 8/11 as does two or more Hammers goals.
The African Cup of Nations kicks-off today and all matches will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Tolu will be previewing selected games for us throughout the tournament so keep an eye out for his match previews later in the week.
