The European Tour continues to baffle with this week’s Canary Islands Championship being held on the same course as the Tenerife Open last week at Golf Costa Adeje, Tenerife, Spain.
The course may be set up differently from last week and will be a par 72 instead of the 71 we saw last week. For this to happen the eighth hole will be increased to a par five, this will mean the course will have six par fives, six par three’s and six par fours. Bizarre to say the least.
The 132 field will be competing on this parkland course for the $1.5 M purse with the winner receiving $230,500.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and warm throughout with the winds expected to stay calmer this week.
This event will be screened live on Sky Sports Golf with coverage starting at 2pm GMT.
With no previous tournament to compare, the only one to have won on this track is Dean Burmester who won the Tenerife Open here last week.
Garrick Higgo
For my main selection at the Canary Islands Championship I’m going to advise Garrick Higgo 16/1 EW Betfair.
The reason for my selection here is that the young 21 year old South African has simply been the most consistent than the others in this field. He is currently ranked 66th in the world with not to many in this field below that figure.
In his last six European Tour events he has finished inside the Top 20 on five occasions with three of those being Top 10 finishes.
He won the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open just two weeks ago and last week on this course he finished 8th at the Tenerife Open.
It’s fair to say this kid has enjoyed playing golf over the past few weeks here in the Canary Islands and can make it two victories in three tournaments with a win here this weekend. Higgo already has two wins on the European Tour, more than most in this field can boast who are years older than him and I can only see him being in contention once again on the back nine on Sunday.
Justin Harding
For my next selection I’m going to suggest Justin Harding 25/1 EW Betfair.
The recent Kenya Open Champion is another with improving form amongst this weaker field. He has fared quite well in the Canaries over the last two weeks, finishing 15th at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open and an even better 12th last week at the Tenerife Open here at Golf Costa Adeje.
Harding can back up his win at the Kenya Open with a victory at the Qatar Masters and will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins on the European Tour.
The 35 year old South African can use his expertise and experience along with his hot putter to gain an advantage over most in this field and will be amongst the ones fighting it out at the finish on Sunday afternoon.
Victor Dubuisson
For my next pick I’m going to advise a player I suggested on this course last week Victor Dubuisson 33/1 EW Bet365.
The 31 year old Frenchman was once ranked 15th in the world and is showing some signs of a return to form. Last week at the Tenerife open he missed the cut by just one shot, after finishing 21st the week before at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open.
He shot a second round 62 at that event and if he can produce another round like that here this week it will set him up nicely to go on and show us what he is capable of. On his game he is certainly one of the most talented golfers in this field.
The Frenchman had a top 20 and a top 10 finish in the Kenya tournaments prior to the Canaries events, so comes here with some form to suggest he’s getting closer to backing up those two victories at The Turkish Airlines Open with another victory on the European Tour and it could well be this week at the Canary Islands Championship.
Kalle Samooja v Adrian Meronk
For my final selection I’m going for Kalle Samooja 10/11 Nap Bet365 to get the better of Adrian Meronk in a 72 hole match bet.
