Luis Enrique is overseeing a changing of the guard in his homeland as Spain’s golden generation make way for a new wave of emerging, young talent, though La Roja’s results – especially at home – remain hugely impressive despite the upheaval in personnel.

Ahead of their latest test there against Switzerland, Enrique’s charges are in the midst of a seven-match winning streak on Spanish soil, and remarkably, Spain have lost just one competitive game on their own patch since 2003.

Both Teams to Score

While they could never be described as prolific, Switzerland have proven themselves consistent goal-scorers in recent years, and the Rossocrociati managed to hit the net at least once in a notable 17 of their last 20 competitive fixtures.

Spain have regularly been finishing with clean sheets at home of the past 12 months, though the calibre of opponents they have faced during that spell, including teams like the Faroe Islands, Malta and Romania, have been low.

Switzerland scored in each of their last two assignments, against tough adversaries in Germany and Croatia, and the Swiss can make an impact on the scoresheet again in Madrid this week.

Gerard Moreno to score anytime

Villarreal star Gerard Moreno is Spain’s undisputed first choice centre-forward at present, and the 28-year-old marksman will expect to lead the line again for La Roja on Saturday.

With three goals in his last four competitive starts for his country, Gerard has already shown an ability to lead from the front, and with his form at club level also showing promise, the ex-Espanyol striker has momentum to draw from.

Each of Gerard’s last three international goals were scored in his homeland, and the lethal finisher is a prime candidate to register again this weekend.

Fabian Schar to Get Booked

With Manuel Akanji ruled out with COVID-19, Fabian Schar is expected to slot into Switzerland’s three-man central defensive unit for their duel with Spain tomorrow.

The versatile Newcastle defender’s disciplinary record is alarmingly poor however, and Schar picked up an incredible 17 yellow cards in just 40 Premier League starts for the Magpies since 2018.

For his country, Schar was cautioned in three of his last five away appearances for the Swiss, and against a Spanish frontline sprinkled with quick-footed and sharp-witted forwards, the 28-year-old could tackle his way into the referee’s notebook again.

Spain 6+ Corners

Spain are generally the dominant force in the majority of their fixtures, dominating possession and the action areas in most of the matches they contest, and that in turn allows them to win their fair share of corner kicks.

In their last five home assignments alone, Spain won nine corners vs Ukraine, eight vs Romania, 15 vs Malta, eight vs the Faroe Islands and 16 against Sweden – figures that reflect their superiority in each game.

La Roja are expected to push Switzerland back into their defensive third for large swathes of Saturday’s fixture in Madrid, and we think the hosts should push past our modest total corner target with relative comfort.
