5.20 – Southwell Golf Club Handicap (6f)
It could be a good evening for trainer Richard Hughes and rider Shane Kelly and they’ve got a decent chance in the opener with BRENNER PASS. The son of Raven’s Pass went close in a C&D novice a year ago and has been in good form in three runs this term.
He was close up in third on return at Lingfield (5f, AW) before scoring on the turf track there last month. Back on the Polytrack there since, he couldn’t get into the race from the rear but was still beaten just over two lengths. The cheekpieces worn then are off now and, with form on the surface and a host of rivals struggling, this could be a nice spot for him.
Selection: Brenner Pass @ SP
5.50 – Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 Novice Stakes (7f)
A Chelmsford novice winner in July, the best form comes from Safe Voyage, who ran well at Kempton last month from a mark of 81. The only colt in the line-up, he’s conceding plenty to weight to the trio of fillies that oppose him and CAPLA DREAM might be the one to win.
She looked in need of the experience on debut before rallying to finish third here over 6f and the race has thrown up three subsequent winners. She should step forward on that effort.
Selection: Capla Dream @ SP
6.20 – Follow At The Races On Twitter Nursery (7f)
BLUE HERO shaped nicely at Wolverhampton on his only previous try on an artificial surface in August, finishing third in a three-way scramble for the line. He hasn’t replicated that in two turf runs since but, with a visor returned here and the handicapper offering relief, he may bounce back and go close under William Buick.
Selection: Blue Hero @ SP
6.50 – Support The ARC Racing Club Handicap (1m4f)
The likes of Charlie Arthur and Blowing Dixie boast excellent Southwell credentials and have to be shortlisted but CEDAR CAGE is the pick. Sir Mark Prescott’s three-year-old won a 7f novice contest here last winter in fine style.
On his return in June, he wasn’t beaten far tackling this sort of trip at Kempton on handicap bow and his only start since was over 1m6f at Haydock on soft ground in July. The gelded son of Golden Horn could have more to offer and so deserves his chance with course form in the book.
Selection: Cedar Cage @ SP
7.20 – Sky Sports Racing On Virgin 535 Handicap (1m4f)
The Hughes/Kelly axis can prevail here with impressive August course winner MACKELLY. He had far too much for his rivals in that contest and has since finished a fine second over 1m6f at Chelmsford when attempting to give 9lb to his main rival in the betting.
Kelly returns in the saddle now and his charge remains unexposed at this distance, while the previous win on the Fibresand was very pleasing.
Selection: Mackelly @ SP
7.50 – Southwell Annual Members Nursery (1m)
The unbeaten filly Mirage Mag sets the standard on nursery bow for a George Boughey team enjoying a fine season. She should handle this surface and is much-respected but a chance is taken instead with THUNDERSTONE for Simon & Ed Crisford. He found only a convincing winner too good on handicap bow at Kempton and might improve again for the fitting of blinkers now.
Selection: Thunderstone @ SP
8.20 – Visit attheraces.com Handicap (1m)
A tough finale and one where it might pay to side with seven-time Southwell winner CUSTARD THE DRAGON. His most recent success here was in January from a mark of 70 and he’s back on that perch now. He’s never won on turf (0-14) but showed his well-being with a near miss on soft ground at Haydock last month.
He’s a hit-and-miss character but he does have a history of going close immediately prior to getting a win, so that previous run is a big plus.
Selection: Custard The Dragon @ SP
