Below, we’ve listed some of the Bundesliga goalscorers to watch out for his weekend and remember – we’ll be covering all the German top tier action on our Bundesliga predictions page.
Jadon Sancho
Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke 04 (Saturday, May 16)
One of German football’s most heated local rivalries, the Rivierderby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 is undoubtedly the pick of the games from the first set of post-interval fixtures.
The title chasing Schwarzgelben will want to pick up where they left off before the break by beating their local antagonists, and wide attacker Jadon Sancho will be key to their chances of success.
Sancho has been in phenomenal form this season, notching 14 goals and 15 assists in 21 Bundesliga starts for Dortmund, and in the absence of the injured Marco Reus, the 20-year-old will carry plenty of goal-scoring responsibility on his shoulders this weekend.
Timo Werner
RB Leipzig vs Freiburg (Saturday, May 16)
If the stories filling the gossip column inches are anything to go by, then Timo Werner will be enjoying his RB Leipzig swansong between now and the end of the season ahead of a move to Liverpool – and the 24-year-old will want to leave on the biggest high possible.
With an incredible 21 goals in 24 Bundesliga starts, Werner is pushing Robert Lewandowski hard for this year’s kicker Torjägerkanone” (kicker top scorer cannon), and he has a chance to close the gap on the Polish hitman in the goalscoring charts when RB Leipzig host Freiburg on Saturday.
Werner, who has averaged a goal every 98 minutes this season, has a particularly strong record against Freiburg having notched ten times in 11 previous encounters, and the German international will back himself to do some damage against them again.
Rouwen Hennings
Fortuna Dusseldorf vs Paderborn (Saturday, May 16)
Veteran striker Rowen Hennings has been a talismanic figure for relegation candidates Fortuna Dusseldorf this season, and the 32-year-old’s 11-goal haul accounts for 40% of his club’s total Bundesliga tally for the season so far.
Hennings started the 2019/20 in barnstorming fashion, though he lost his goal-scoring touch a little in the run up to the COVID-19 induced hiatus, hitting just three goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.
On Saturday, Hennings has a great opportunity to get back into the groove when he lines out for Fortuna Dusseldorf against Paderborn. The division’s bottom club hold the league’s second worst defensive record and Hennings should find plenty of gaps in their rearguard to exploit.
Marcus Thuram
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Borussia Monchengladbach (Saturday May 16)
In late October last year, versatile attacker Marcus Thuram starred for Gladbach in their thrilling 4-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, and the clubs’ rematch this weekend promises to be just as entertaining.
22-year-old Thuram, who is the son of French World Cup winner Lilian, has been impressing with Die Fohlen this season with a series of dynamic displays from various positions across their frontline.
With six goals and eight assists, Thuram has been a key component in Monchengladbach’s forward moving machine this term, as Marco Rose’s rapidly developing side inch towards Champions League qualification.
Having already registered against Frankfurt earlier this season, Thuram should be armed with enough confidence to make a similar impact against Die Adler on Saturday.
Robert Lewandowski
Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich
Robert Lewandowski might be on the wrong side of 30 now, though the Polish international’s goal-scoring potency doesn’t seem to be lessening with age.
The expert finisher is the Bundesliga’s leading marksman this season with a sensational 25 goals in 21 starts for Bayern Munich, and the former Dortmund star looks odds on to claim his third top scorer award on the spin.
Lewandowski netted for the Bavarians in their hard-fought 2-1 win over newly promoted Union Berlin back in October, and Bayern will need their leading man to produce the goods again if they are to complete the league double over Die Eisernen on Sunday.
Remarkably, Lewy has scored the first goal for Bayern on 13 separate occasions this season.
