WHAT an incredible first day at The Open with Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods shooting themselves out of action.
The superstar duo stumbled to rounds of 79 and 78 respectively and need a miracle just to make the cut.
Woods’ struggles weren’t a shock as he’s clearly not fully fit but McIlroy’s meltdown at Royal Portrush stunned the Northern Ireland nation.
It was almost all over after a quadruple bogey at the first and although he battled back he finished with triple bogey seven as his shoulders hunched even deeper.
At the right end of the scoreboard JB Holmes (66) leads by one from Shane Lowry (67) with a load of players on 68 including two of my antepost picks Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka.
Rahm fell back from five under after a poor finish while cool Koepka dropped his only shot at the 17th after a controlled round and he still looks the man to beat.
Koepka is now 4-1 favourite with bet365 with Rahm 13-2 with the same firm. Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose are both 14s with Lowry 18s at sportingbet.
McIlroy is 5-1 with Betway to make the cut but it’s unlikely as he probably needs to shoot 66 at worst. Woods’ chances are even slimmer and he is 13-2 with the same firm.
Other bets I put up yesterday included Darren Clarke top senior and that’s on while two out of four threeball tips were winners.
I might add threeball or mythical twoball bets in the morning but more likely to do so on Saturday for the third round.
Antepost Picks Previously Advised
- 2pts Koepka to win (11-1, William Hill)
- 1.5pts ew Rahm (16-1, Betfred – 8 places)
- 1pt ew Kuchar (30-1, Coral – 10 places)
- 1pt ew Woodland (70-1, bet365 – 8 places)
