Taylor: Knocked out by Dave Chisnall
The PDC World Darts Championships has become wide open after 15-time world champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor was surprisingly knocked out by Dave Chisnall in round 2 at the Alexandra Palace.
Taylor, 51, was the odds on favourite to lift the title for the 16th time, but it wasn’t to be as Chisnall played fantastically well to take out the doubles when it counted to defeat The Power 4-1.
Taylor’s defeat has opened it up in terms of the betting. He was the clear favourite by a considerable margin, but now there are a number of players who will rightly consider themselves as serious title challengers now.
Indeed, Chisnall himself has been brought into that category after his success. The world number 39 may have been considered as very much of an outside bet before the tournament began, but beating Phil Taylor has immediately thrown him into the ‘potential champion’ bracket as his odds have plummeted. He’s now the best price of 9/1 (Paddy Power, Victor Chandler).
The new favourite to lift the world crown is Scotland’s Gary Anderson. He is very much considered as the number two player in the world behind Taylor, and perhaps now his can step out of the shadow to lift his first world title. He’s not shown the greatest form in the tournament to date, and the pressure levels will be raised considerably with the favourite tag which is now upon him. He’s now at 7/2 (Coral, William Hill).
James Wade is second favourite at 9/2 (Bet365, SkyBet) after an impressive display in his 2nd round match with Jelle Klassen, beating the Dutchman 4-0. Last year’s champion, Adrian Lewis, is next in line in terms of the odds at 11/2 (bwin), but he hasn’t really shown the form that he did in last year’s event so far.
One player to look out for is one of the least popular players on the circuit, Paul Nicholson. He enjoys playing up to the crowd as the bad boy of darts, and he gives as good as he gets up on the stage. He’s been very impressive in his progress into round 3, beating Mensur Suljovic 3-1 before thrashing Alan Tabern 4-0. He can be backed at a best price of 12/1 (Sportingbet) and I’d suggest you take that price if you fancy him to do it and you can get it as he’s as low as 8s with other companies.
It really is wide open and anybody’s championships to win. Game on.
