England v Sweden: Betting Tips

England v Sweden

Kick off: Tuesday 8pm

The moderate reaction to England’s  victory over World Champions, Spain, has been as surprising as it has been refreshing.

There’s have been few mention of being ‘unofficially the best team in World’ and even fewer who now suddenly  believe that the Three Lions can go on to lift the European Championship trophy. But I suspect Fleet Street’s muted response has more to do with the sharpened knives engraved with Fabio Capello’s name that they now need to put back in the drawer for a later day.

It wasn’t Spain at their most sparkling, but any win over the best international team in the world is a good one. Unfortunately it doesn’t give us much, if any, help in trying to predict the outcome of another meaningless friendly.

Opponents Sweden qualified for Euro 2012 as the best runner-up across all the groups. In a group that included Moldova, Finalnd and San Marino that’s not much of a surprise and it’s fair to say this isn’t a vintage Swedish generation.

They kicked off their preparations for Euro 2012 with a 2-0 defeat at neighbours Denmark so they’re not expected to pull up too many trees at Wembley on Tuesday. Bookies rate them 9/2 (Victor Chandler), incidentally the same price England ahead of the win over Spain, whilst Capello’s men are short enough at 3/4 (Unibet).

Team news will be all important if you’re having a punt on the outcome. Signs are that Daniel Sturridge will feature and possibly start. The Chelsea striker is just 5/2 (Ladbrokes) to grab a goal. At the other end Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the class act for the Swedes. Under rated here in the UK, his scoring record is phenomenal, averaging a goal every two games at almost every club he’s been at. SkyBet go 11/4 that he’ll score and with changes expected in the England defense he can expose any vulnerability.

I’m hoping England will show a bit more adventure than on Saturday and it’ll be a bit more open. Friendlies are notoriously bitty as change after change affects team shape and momentum but this could work in our favour and I’m liking William Hill’s 10/11 on both teams to score.
