England v Spain: Betting Preview
England v Spain
Kick off: Saturday 5.15pm
In the midst of poppygate you may be forgiven for forgetting that a game of football is due to be played on Saturday. The media frenzy surrounding the use of the opiate lapel next to the three lions might have caused a very different tune to be sung had Euro 96 been staged on 11/11.
The saga has blown over the obvious negative controversies surrounding Camp England with Terry and Rooney relishing the relative shade from the limelight’s oppressive sheen. Darren Bent also reported glare in his eyes this week, “Every time you play for your country it is like you are on trial, to be honest” the England star grumbled.
It seems difficult to pin down anything positive on the England team at the moment, which has perhaps contributed part of the prominence the pinning of the poppy has played.
The Spanish inquisition is sure to highlight the gaping flaws of the side. The only challenges Capello’s side have faced in recent times have ended in defeat with France, Germany and Brazil all emerging victorious.
Spain were also comfortable winners over the Italian’s men on the last meeting, a 2-0 friendly win back in 2009. Since, the Spanish have won a World Cup, the majority of their squad have also enjoyed near total domination with Barca. Eight members of corporation tiki-taka are in the squad, signalling danger for England’s laboured defenders.
With only Costa Rica scheduled for Del Bosque’s side before they defend their European crown next summer, this is an obvious opportunity to test their armoury is still firing at maximum power.
Silva has lit up the Premiership and is the clear 13/8 favourite with Victor Chandler to be crowned PFA Player of the Year (Stan James already have the silky Spaniard at 8/11).
The strength of Spain is demonstrated by the fact that the Premiership’s top performer is not even guaranteed a spot in the starting line-up. An on-form Fabregas together with the midfield dynamism of his team mates Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets is simply too much for any nation.
The bar has been set and it would be a great surprise if an abject England side could meet the standard.
No Rooney means the frontline will be led by an inexperienced partnership from a nervous Bent, his Villa team mate Agbonlahor, rookies Sturridge and Welbeck (not regular starters at club level) and Fulham’s Bobby Zamora. The difference in class is evident.
A Spain win looks inevitable and has been backed in from 11/10 to a now best price of 10/11 with Boylesports.
Given, England’s lack of striking options, a victory to nil also looks likely at 12/5 with Blue Sq. In fact, why not go the whole hog, abandon national pride and back the Spanish armada to be leading at the end of both halves at 11/5 with Ladbrokes. Just remember to wear your poppy.
Recommended bets:
- Spain to win – 10/11 (Boylesports)
- Spain to win to nil – 12/5 (Blue Sq)
- Spain/Spain – 11/5 (Ladbrokes)
