DEC 7: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TIPS
IT’S a huge night for Man United and Man City as they try to join Chelsea and Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League.
City must beat Bayern Munich at home and hope Villarreal do them a favour by picking up their first point of the campaign.
At least it’s in United’s hands as they only have to beat Basel in Switzerland to assure their place.
Bet365 offer just under 3-1 on the Manchester pair making it through but City could win and crah out.
Bayern, having already won the group are likely to rest players, so I’ll be looking at City at a best 4-6 with Stan James.
Ssecond-placed Napoli head for Spain and task that would normally be tough. But Villarreal have lost all five games and been surprisingly poor.
They’ll be desperate to get at least a point on the board but strike sensation Edinson Cavani can lead the Italians to glory. Napoli are a biggest 3-4 with Chandler while Cavani is 4-1 with the likes of William Hill and Ladbrokes.
Benfica, a best 1-7 with William Hill, should clinch top spot in Group C by beating Otelul Galati at home, leaving Basel and United to fight for runners-up place.
United were held 3-3 at home to the Swiss but have closed the back door in recent weeks and I expect them to do the business.
I don’t think Sir Alex Ferguson will play for the draw so take United at 8-13 with the likes of Bet365 and William Hill to make it through in style.
I’ve been all over 1-0 United in recent weeks but with it being a cup final for Basel I can see it finishing maybe 2-0 or 2-1 United.
Inter Milan have won Group D so won’t be playing their top team at home to CSKA Moscow who can finish second if Lille and Trabzonspor draw.
However, after just one win in five I can’t see the Russians getting more than a point.
Lille can’t make that assumption and they should be backed at 8-15 with Boylesports to notch the win they require.
In Group D it’s almost certain Ajax will join Real Madrid in the last 16. Ajax need to avoid a heavy defeat at home to the Spanish, who like Barcelona on Tuesday, will rest their stars for the clash if the titans at the weekend and this could be a draw.
Lyon and Ajax have an identical head-to-head record so goal difference could be needed to separate them if the Frenchmen win away to Dynamo Zagreb.
I’m sure Lyon will do the business in Croatia against a side that’s lost all five games and conceded 15 goals then hope for a miracle in Holland. Take Lyon at 20-23 with Boylesports.
