Man City v Liverpool – Wednesday 11th January (BBC1, 7.45pm)

Manchester City take on Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in the first-leg of their Carling Cup semi-final. City may be leading the Premier League but in the last month they have been dumped out of both the Champions League and FA Cup. Their main focus is of course the league but Roberto Mancini will also be eying up this competition, which could deliver him the first trophy of the season. Meanwhile, Liverpool are without a trophy since 2006 and they will want to come away from Manchester with a good result. Man City are the 19/20 favourites with Paddy Power to win the first-leg, while Liverpool can be backed at 3/1, with a draw available at 12/5. All eyes will be on Man City to see if they can bounce back from their FA Cup defeat to fierce rivals Man Utd. City beat Liverpool 3-0 in the league last week and they will be looking for a repeat performance on Wednesday. Liverpool started the match strongly but, as so often has been the case this season, failed to convert any of their chances. However, they have managed to score at least two goals in all their Carling Cup fixtures so far. City are priced at 18/1 to win 3-0 again, 15/2 to win 2-0 and 7/1 to win 2-1. Liverpool would no doubt take a 1-1 draw at 11/1 or they may even be worth a punt at 16/1 to come away with a 2-1 win.

Sergio Aguero was in cracking form against Man Utd and he once again can be found as the favourite to open the scoring, with odds of 9/2. Edin Dzeko has been handed odds of 5/1 to score first, while Mario Balotellis is available at 11/2. With Luis Suarez suspended Liverpool will now have to rely heavily on Andy Carroll and Craig Bellamy, who can both be backed at 8/1 to be the first goalscorer. Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard is available at 10/1.
