BDO world darts final preview

Tony O'Shea is looking for his first world title
There will be a new name on the BDO darts world championship trophy at Lakeside as England’s Tony O’Shea faces the Netherlands’ Christian Kist in the final.
Neither player has a world title to their name but that will change on Sunday. Both came through thrilling semi-finals which went to a deciding set, and if the final is just half as exciting and enthralling as those two games, we’re in for a cracking final.
Tony O’Shea went to a deciding final set with Dutchman Wesley Harms in his semi-final. The ‘Silverback’ from Stockport was up and down during the match but managed to clinch the match by hitting double 10 in the final leg.
Christian Kist made the final by seeing off two-time world champion Ted Hankey. Hankey threw away a 5-3 lead to lose the last three sets of the semi-final to the Dutchman. After a bit of banter from the crowd, which the Count took exception to, he lost his rag and in fact just threw one of his darts off the board in disgust. Kist hit a double four in the final leg to seal the victory to a huge roar from the Lakeside crowd, while Hankey stormed off in a huff after a brief handshake with his opponent.
O’Shea has had a tricky run to the final, overcoming defending champion Martin Adams in the quarter final in a match that showed his real class. He didn’t let Adams in with too many chances and produced a fantastic 170 checkout to boot. So he’s in fantastic form but is the slight outsider with the bookies at 11/10 (Bet365, Paddy Power, SkyBet).
Kist has had a simpler route to the final, on paper at least. The victory over Hankey in the semi-final was a superb comeback although his opponent was partially to blame for his own downfall. The confidence that a win against Hankey will give him could be priceless, and he’s been playing really well all week to earn the favourites’ tag for the final. He can be backed at 10/11 (888 Sport, Blue Sq).
It should be a great and closely fought final. O’Shea has more experience on the stage at Lakeside and for me, that lies in his favour. You never know how the pressure of a world final will impact on the two players with this being a new experience for them both, but I’m tipping O’Shea to win a close game by seven sets to five which is available at 15/2 (Coral).
